SC House: Proposed Rule Changes
Last week was a big win in Columbia! Our many calls to House Reps paid off, as the rule change bills H4695 and H4735 were not brought to the floor for a vote. If passed, these rule changes would limit our House Members from bringing amendments and debating bills from the floor. We support stringent, civilized debate on all legislation for our reps, so we celebrate this victory. That said, we know we must remain vigilant as we expect watered down versions to be brought back to the floor.
We encourage you to read the above bills and educate yourselves on the issue. Here is the SCFC assessment on these rule changes. If you are in agreement with these proposed bills, then you don’t need to take any action. If you do not want these changes, the South Carolina Freedom Caucus has said the following steps would be most impactful:
If you know your House Rep has committed to a NO vote, contact them and thank them for this bold stand. Let them know you will continue to follow progress on this issue and look forward to their NO vote on any version brought to the floor that limits debate and amendments. (Find your Legislator here)
If you’re unsure of your House Rep’s stance, contact them and ask them to vote NO on these rule changes. Use this to begin a respectful conversation that increases your understanding of their position and provides an opportunity for you to explain your support for their rights to debate and freely discuss issues on behalf of their constituents.
Sign this Coalition Letter opposing the rule changes.
We are grateful for our SCFC and other House Members’ bold stand for our Rights and for all your help as we support their efforts this Legislative Session. #AdvancingLibertyTogether
